The Creator Who Holds It All Together

Daily Devotional — March 18th, 2026

"For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him."

— Colossians 1:16 (KJV)

The Devotion

I remember standing outside one evening, looking up at the sky. The stars were scattered across the darkness like someone had thrown handfuls of light into an endless canvas. My daughter, who was about five at the time, grabbed my hand and whispered, "Daddy, who put the stars up there?" I looked down at her little face, glowing in the moonlight, and I said, "Jesus did." She nodded like that was the most natural answer in the world. And honestly, it was.

There is something about Colossians 1:16 that shakes me every single time I read it. It does not just tell us that God made the world. It tells us that Jesus, the very same Jesus who was born in a manger, who walked dusty roads in sandals, who wept at the grave of His friend Lazarus, is the One by whom everything that exists came into being. Everything. The mountains that take your breath away. The oceans that roar with a power no human can tame. The tiny ladybug crawling on a leaf in your garden. The galaxies spinning millions of light years away that no telescope has even discovered yet. All of it. By Him and for Him.

That truth does something to my heart. It humbles me. It brings me to my knees. Because if Jesus is the One who created thrones and dominions and principalities and powers, then nothing in this world, nothing in the spiritual realm, nothing in any realm is outside of His reach or authority. Nothing surprises Him. Nothing overwhelms Him. And nothing is beyond His ability to handle.

I think sometimes we shrink Jesus down to fit our understanding. We make Him small enough to manage, small enough to fit inside our Sunday morning experience. But this verse will not let us do that. This verse explodes every small box we try to put Him in. He is not just a good teacher. He is not just a moral example. He is the Creator of the entire universe, visible and invisible. The things we can see with our eyes and the things that exist in dimensions we cannot even perceive. He made them all.

And here is what truly breaks me wide open. It says all things were created not only by Him but for Him. That means you were created for Him. I was created for Him. Every breath you take today, every heartbeat, every moment of consciousness is a gift from the One who made you on purpose and for a purpose. You are not an accident. You are not a random collection of cells drifting through a meaningless universe. You were crafted by the hands of the King of Kings, and you were made for His glory.

I want you to sit with that for a moment. Let it sink deep into your bones. Because I know what it feels like to wonder if you matter. I know what it feels like to lie awake at three in the morning, staring at the ceiling, feeling like the world would spin just fine without you. I have been in that dark place. But this verse is a lamp in that darkness. It says you were created by Him and for Him. The Creator of the universe wanted you here. He placed you in this moment in history, in this family, in this city, in this life for a reason that only His infinite wisdom fully understands.

Explanation of the Scripture

The apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians from a Roman prison cell. The believers in Colossae were being pulled in different directions by false teachings. Some were telling them that Jesus was just one of many spiritual beings. Others were mixing philosophy and human tradition with the gospel, trying to water down the supreme authority of Christ.

Paul was having none of it. In this verse, he sets the record straight with absolute clarity. He declares that Jesus Christ is the Creator of all things. Not some things. Not most things. All things. He specifies what "all things" includes: everything in heaven and on earth, everything visible and invisible. Then he goes further and names specific categories of spiritual authority: thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers. These refer to ranks and orders within the angelic and spiritual realm.

Paul's point is unmistakable. There is no created being, no spiritual force, no earthly power that stands above Jesus Christ. He created them all. They exist because He spoke them into being. And they exist for His purposes, for His pleasure, and for His glory. This was a direct challenge to any false teaching that tried to reduce Jesus to anything less than the supreme, sovereign Creator of absolutely everything.

The phrase "for him" at the end of the verse carries tremendous weight. It means that all of creation finds its ultimate purpose and meaning in Christ. Apart from Him, nothing makes sense. History itself is moving toward the fulfillment of His plan. Every created thing, whether it knows it or not, exists to serve His eternal purposes.

Life Application

So what does this mean for you today, on this ordinary Wednesday in March? It means everything.

If Jesus created all things, then He has authority over all things. That includes the situation you are facing right now. That job you are worried about losing. That relationship that feels like it is falling apart. That diagnosis the doctor gave you last week. That child who has wandered far from the faith. None of it is too big for the One who flung the stars into space and set the planets in their orbits.

When you feel small and powerless, remember that the Creator of the universe calls you His own. When the world feels chaotic and out of control, remember that the One who made thrones and dominions and principalities and powers is still on His throne. He has not stepped away. He has not lost interest. He is working all things together for His glory and for the good of those who love Him.

Living out this truth means surrendering your need to control everything. It means waking up each morning and saying, "Lord, You made me for You. Today I choose to live for You. I trust that You who created all things are more than able to handle what I am walking through." It means releasing your grip on the things you are holding so tightly and placing them into the hands of the One who holds the entire universe.

It also means finding your identity and your worth in Him alone. The world will try to tell you that your value comes from your achievements, your appearance, your bank account, or your social media following. But this verse tells a very different story. Your value comes from the fact that you were created by the King of all Kings and created for a purpose that He designed before the foundations of the world.

Lessons to Learn

  • Jesus is supreme over everything. There is no power, no authority, no force in all of creation that is greater than Him. When fear whispers that your problems are too big, this truth shouts back that your God is bigger.
  • You were made on purpose and for a purpose. You are not a mistake. You are not here by chance. The Creator of the universe intentionally designed you and placed you in this world for His glory.
  • Nothing is outside of His control. The visible and the invisible, the earthly and the heavenly, all of it answers to Him. You can rest in His sovereignty even when you cannot see what He is doing.
  • Worship is the natural response. When you truly grasp the magnitude of who Jesus is and what He has done, worship becomes as natural as breathing. You cannot encounter this truth and remain unmoved.
  • False teachings crumble before this truth. Any belief system that reduces Jesus to just a prophet, just a teacher, or just a good man falls apart in the light of this verse. He is the Creator. He is God.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you been living as though Jesus is truly the Creator and Lord of everything in your life, or have there been areas where you have tried to maintain control on your own?
  2. When you face difficult circumstances, do you tend to forget the greatness and supremacy of Christ? How can this verse change the way you respond to challenges?
  3. What does it mean to you personally that you were created "for Him"? How does that truth shape the way you see your purpose and your daily choices?
  4. Are there any false ideas or worldly philosophies that have crept into your thinking and caused you to view Jesus as less than who He truly is? What needs to change?
  5. How can you live in worship today, not just in a church service, but in the way you speak, work, love, and serve, in response to the truth that Christ is the Creator of all things?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I come before You today with a heart full of awe and wonder. Lord Jesus, You are the Creator of all things. The heavens declare Your glory, and the earth is filled with the work of Your hands. Forgive me for the times I have made You small in my mind. Forgive me for the moments I have tried to carry burdens that were never mine to carry, forgetting that You who created the universe are more than able to handle every detail of my life.

I thank You that I was created by You and for You. That truth changes everything. It gives me purpose on the days I feel purposeless. It gives me hope on the days I feel hopeless. It reminds me that I am known and loved by the One who set the stars in place.

Lord, I surrender every area of my life to You today. The things I can see and the things I cannot see. The struggles that keep me awake at night and the fears I have not even spoken out loud. You know them all, and You are greater than them all. I choose to trust You. I choose to worship You. I choose to live for You, because that is exactly what I was created to do.

Open my eyes to see Your greatness in new ways. Help me to walk through this day with the confidence that comes from knowing the Creator of all things is walking with me. Let my life be a reflection of Your glory, today and every day.

In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, my Creator, my Savior, and my King, I pray.

Amen.
