Can I be honest with you about something? There was a time in my walk with God where I genuinely thought He had stopped talking to me. I would pray and feel nothing. I would open my Bible and the words felt like they were written for someone else. Everyone at church seemed to be hearing from God, getting breakthroughs, and sharing testimonies. And there I was, sitting in silence, wondering what I did wrong.
Maybe you know that feeling. Maybe you are living in it right now. And if you are, I want to tell you something that took me a long time to understand. God was never silent during those seasons. Not once. I was just looking for Him in the wrong places, expecting Him to show up in ways He never promised He would.
The reality is that God is still speaking to His children today. He has not retired. He has not lost interest in you. And He certainly has not forgotten your name. But if we want to hear Him, we need to understand how He actually speaks. And that is what this post is about.
1. Through His Written Word

When Paul wrote these words to young Timothy, he was making something unmistakably clear. Scripture did not come from the imagination of men. It was breathed out by God Himself. Every chapter, every verse, every word on those pages carries the weight of heaven behind it. That means when you sit down and read your Bible, you are not doing a religious exercise. You are putting yourself in position to hear directly from the mouth of God.

A lot of believers treat the Bible like a textbook you pull out when you have a problem and put away once you find your answer. But that is not how this works. The Word of God is a living thing. It does not just give you answers. It reshapes how you think, how you respond to trouble, and how you see yourself. The more time you spend in it, the more familiar His voice becomes. And once you learn to recognize God's voice through Scripture, you will start recognizing it everywhere else too.
Life Application
Do not wait until you are in a crisis to pick up your Bible. Make it the first thing you reach for in the morning, not your phone. Start with one Psalm and one chapter from the New Testament each day. Read slowly. Ask God, "What are You saying to me here?" before you start. Write down anything that stays with you. After two weeks of this, I promise you will notice a difference.
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I neglected Your Word. I do not want to just read pages. I want to hear Your voice in every verse. Open my understanding. Make the Scriptures come alive in my spirit. Give me a hunger for Your Word that does not fade when life gets busy. In Jesus' name, Amen.
2. Through the Holy Spirit

Before Jesus went to the cross, He told His disciples something that should have given them enormous comfort. He said that when the Holy Spirit comes, He would not leave them guessing. The Spirit would guide them, teach them, and even reveal future things to them. That same promise belongs to every born again believer today. If you have given your life to Christ, the Holy Spirit lives inside you. And He is not just sitting there. He is actively speaking, leading, warning, and directing you every single day.

The Holy Spirit rarely speaks the way people expect. Most believers are waiting for an audible voice from heaven or some dramatic experience. But more often, the Spirit speaks through a deep impression in your heart. That sudden conviction when you are about to make a wrong choice. That unexplainable peace in the middle of chaos. That gentle pull toward a person who needs encouragement. Those moments are not random feelings. That is the Spirit of God doing what Jesus said He would do. He is guiding you into truth.
Life Application
Practice silence. That sounds strange in a world that never shuts up, but it is necessary. Find ten minutes today where you turn everything off. No music, no scrolling, no distractions. Just sit with God and say, "Holy Spirit, I am here. I am listening." Do not try to manufacture a feeling. Just be still. The more you do this, the more sensitive you become to His leading. It is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets.

Holy Spirit, I need You. I have been depending on my own understanding for too long and I am tired of guessing. Teach me to hear You clearly. Sharpen my spiritual ears. 3. Through Godly People Around You

God never intended for you to walk through life alone, trying to figure everything out by yourself. One of the most common and most overlooked ways He communicates is through other believers. A pastor who preaches a message that seems written just for you. A friend who calls you out of nowhere with a word of encouragement. An older believer who shares wisdom from a place of genuine experience. None of that is coincidence. That is God using the people around you to confirm what He has already been saying.
Spiritual Insight
Now, this comes with a warning. Not every person who claims to speak for God is actually hearing from Him. There are people who will tell you what you want to hear instead of what you need to hear. There are others who will give you advice that sounds wise on the surface but directly contradicts the Bible. Always test what people say against Scripture. If it does not line up with the Word of God, throw it out. It does not matter how spiritual the person seems or how many followers they have online. The Bible is the final standard. Period.
Life Application
Look at your inner circle honestly. Are the people closest to you pushing you toward God or pulling you away from Him? If you do not have mature believers speaking into your life, start looking for a small group, a Bible study, or even just one faithful brother or sister you can be honest with. Having the right voices around you can literally change the direction of your life.
Prayer
Lord, surround me with people who love You and who will tell me the truth even when it is uncomfortable. Remove every voice from my life that is leading me away from Your will. Give me discernment to know the difference between godly counsel and flattery. And make me the kind of person who speaks life and truth into others too. In Jesus' name, Amen.
4. Through Doors He Opens and Closes
Explanation
Jesus said these words to the church in Philadelphia, and they carry a truth that applies to every believer today. God is sovereign. He controls doors. When He opens one, nobody on earth or in hell can close it. And when He shuts one, you can push and bang on it all day long but it is not going to budge. He speaks through opportunities, redirections, delays, and even through the things that seem to fall apart. Sometimes a closed door is not rejection. It is protection.
Spiritual Insight
Here is where a lot of believers get confused. They think every open door is from God and every closed door means God said no. But that is too simple. Some open doors are tests. Some closed doors are just temporary. You cannot read circumstances alone and call it hearing from God. You need circumstances to line up with Scripture and with the leading of the Holy Spirit. When all three agree, that is your green light. When they do not, do not force it. Wait on the Lord. He knows what He is doing even when you cannot see it.
Life Application
The next time a door closes on you and you feel frustrated, stop and ask God this question: "Are You protecting me from something I cannot see?" Then give Him room to answer. Do not rush to the next opportunity out of panic. And when a door opens, do not just run through it because it looks good. Pray first. Check it against the Word. Talk to a trusted believer. Then move when you have peace.
Prayer
Father, I trust Your timing even when I do not understand it. When doors close, help me not to complain but to trust that You see what I cannot see. When doors open, give me wisdom to know if it is You leading me or if it is a distraction. I surrender my plans to You. Your will is better than anything I could design for myself. He Was Never Silent
If I could go back and talk to the version of myself who sat in church feeling invisible, who prayed desperate prayers that seemed to bounce off the walls, I would tell him this: God was speaking the whole time. Through a verse that kept showing up. Through a friend who said the right thing at the right moment. Through a door that closed and broke my heart but saved me from something I could not see. Through a quiet knowing deep in my spirit that I kept ignoring because I wanted something louder.
God does not always speak the way you want Him to. But He always speaks the way you need Him to. And if you will slow down, open your Bible, invite the Holy Spirit into your daily decisions, surround yourself with the right people, and pay attention to what God is doing in your circumstances, you will hear Him. I am not saying that because it sounds nice. I am saying it because I have lived it.
He is talking to you right now. Through this very post. Through that verse you keep thinking about. Through that situation you have been stressed over. He is not silent. He never was.

Lord, I come before You with a heart that wants to hear You. Forgive me for the times I accused You of being silent when I was the one who was not listening. Open my ears, open my spirit, open my eyes to see Your hand in every area of my life. I do not want to just know about You. I want to hear from You personally, daily, and deeply.
