Understanding Spiritual Gifts
Discovering and Developing Your God-Given Abilities for the Benefit of the Body of Christ
What Are Spiritual Gifts?
Spiritual gifts are particular abilities given by the Holy Spirit to believers for the goal of building up the body of Christ. These gifts are not natural qualities or learned skills, but rather supernatural empowerments that enable Christians to serve successfully in God's kingdom.
The Bible states that every believer receives at least one spiritual gift at the time of their conversion. These gifts are not for personal advantage but are supposed to be used in love for the common welfare of the church and the promotion of God's goals in the world.
Common Spiritual Gifts
While the Bible contains various lists of spiritual gifts (Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, 28-30, Ephesians 4:11, 1 Peter 4:10-11), below are some of the most frequently recognized:
Wisdom
The ability to apply spiritual truth to specific situations in a way that offers clarity and direction. Those with this gift typically provide godly advise and help others see God's perspective.
Knowledge
The ability to grasp and articulate spiritual truth with insight that goes beyond typical learning. This gift helps others grasp biblical concepts and apply them to life.
Faith
An exceptional trust in God and His promises, frequently leading others to greater dependence on God. Those with this gift perceive what God intends to do and believe it will happen.
Healing
The ability to serve as a human instrument through whom God brings restoration to health. This gift may act through prayer, laying on of hands, or other means as God directs.
Miracles
The ability to serve as a human instrument through whom God executes powerful acts that affect normal situations. This gift reveals God's power over nature, sickness, and evil.
Prophecy
The ability to receive and transmit God's message to His people. This may involve foretelling future occurrences, but more usually involves forthtelling God's truth with clarity and strength.
"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common benefit... All things are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines."
1 Corinthians 12:7, 11 (NIV)Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts
Discovering your spiritual gifts begins with a willingness to help others. As you move forth in faith to ministry, your gifts will become visible via effectiveness and affirmation from others. Prayer, spiritual gift inventories, and opportunities to serve in many areas can all aid in discovering your gifts.
Remember that spiritual gifts are given by God's grace, not acquired by merit. They are tools for service, not status symbols. As you grow in your relationship with Christ and serve His church, your gifts will develop and bring fruit for God's glory.
