Because of our sins, which we commit throughout our life, we tend to be preoccupied with the things of this world. In His mercy, however, God never ceases to plead with us to return to Him. Thus the phrase “getting right with God” is a process of repentance, renewal and reconciliation with God.
A God-Shaped Hole in Our Souls
It is the Bible that reminds us none of us has a free pass and we all need God’s mercy:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3.23).
Sin drives us away from the presence of God but love never fails. God intends to reestablish our relationship with Him regardless of what we do or do not do.
Steps to Get Right with God
Acknowledge Your Sins
Confession is the first step to reconciliation with God.
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
Take time to inspect your heart and acknowledge areas in which you have gone astray of God's will.
Repent with a Sincere Heart
True repentance is not just feeling sorry for your sins, but it is a change of heart, a turning away from sin.
"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord" (Acts 3:19).
Refreshing and renewal in God's promise are extended to all who truly repent.
Accept His Forgiveness
God is very merciful; through Jesus Christ, He has given us the gift of salvation and forgiveness.
"But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
Accept His forgiveness and walk with confidence in the freedom He gives you.
Living a Righteous Life
Upon receiving reconciliation through God, it then becomes important to live a life whereby one honors Him.
"Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33).
But most of all, be growing up in the Lord-day by day-through prayer, Bible study, and obedience to God's Word.
God's Assurance
As we draw closer to God, He gives us an embracing welcome.
Come near to God and He will come near to you" James 4:8.
He stands ready at any moment to take you back into His loving arms no matter how far away you have gone.
Getting right with God is not an event at a certain point in time; it's a continuous process in pursuit of Him. Lean into His love as you go through these steps and never-failing grace.
A Prayer to Get Right with God
Lord Heavenly Father,
I stand before You now, humbled and at the same time contrite of heart, owning to my transgressions and seeking Your forgiveness. Search me, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. I am grateful for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ that covered my sin. Give me guidance to walk in Your ways, living a life that would please You. Strengthen me through Your Word and Holy Spirit. Thank You for Your love and mercy. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
