When God Takes the Throne of Your Heart, Everything Else Falls Into Place
There is a battle happening inside every one of us. It is a silent war, and most times, we do not even realize we are fighting it. On one side stand our ambitions, our dreams, our relationships, our careers, and everything we hold dear. On the other side stands the One who gave us life itself.
Who wins in your heart?
I have walked through seasons where I thought I was putting God first. I prayed in the morning. I read my Bible sometimes. I went to church on Sundays. But when I looked closely at how I spent my time, my money, and my energy, the truth stared back at me with uncomfortable honesty. God was not on the throne. He was somewhere in the room, yes. But He was not seated where He deserved to be.
Maybe you are in that same place right now. And that is okay. Because today, we are going to talk about what it truly means to give God the first place in everything.
The Cry of Heaven: "Give Me Your Whole Heart, Not Just Pieces"
God is not interested in being an option in your life. He does not want to be one of the many things you juggle. He wants to be the center from which everything else flows.
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus makes this clear:
"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."
Look at that word "first." Not second. Not when you have time. Not after you have chased everything else. First.
When I truly meditated on this verse, it broke something in me. I realized I had been seeking other things first, hoping God would bless my hustle anyway. But the order matters. Heaven responds when we get the order right.
The Trap of Good Things Becoming God Things
Here is something that took me years to understand. Sometimes, the things that push God out of first place are not bad things. They are good things. Your job is a good thing. Your family is a good thing. Your education is a good thing. Your dreams are good things.
But when good things become ultimate things, they become dangerous things.
Exodus 20:3 reminds us:
"You shall have no other gods before Me."
Anything that occupies the space that belongs to God alone has become an idol. It does not matter if it looks holy or productive or even beneficial. If it sits where only God should sit, it has crossed a line.
I have seen people worship their careers and neglect their Creator. I have seen people worship their relationships and lose their connection with the Lover of their souls. And I have been that person too.
What Happens When You Build Without the Master Builder
There is a sobering verse in Psalm 127:1 that should make every one of us pause:
"Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain."
You can work hard. You can plan well. You can strategize and execute brilliantly. But if God is not the foundation, you are building on sand. And when the storms come, and they always come, everything you built will crumble.
I think about the times I tried to make things happen in my own strength. I was busy. I was achieving. But I was empty. There was no peace, no lasting joy, and no sense that I was walking in purpose. Because I was building without the Master Builder.
When you put God first, you are not just adding Him to your plans. You are inviting Him to make His plans your plans.
The Beautiful Exchange: Your Control for His Peace
Proverbs 3:5 to 6 paints a picture that I return to again and again:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."
There is a beautiful exchange that happens when you put God first. You give up the exhausting burden of trying to control everything. And in return, He gives you peace. He gives you direction. He gives you the confidence that even when you do not understand the road, you can trust the One leading you.
This is not easy for people like us who love to plan, to control, and to know what is coming next. But there is freedom in surrender. There is rest in letting go.
Your Time Tells the Truth About Your Heart
Let me ask you a hard question. Where does your time go?
I am not asking where you say your priorities are. I am asking where your hours actually go. Because our calendars do not lie. They reveal what we truly value.
Ephesians 5:15-16 challenges us:
"See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil."
Putting God first is not just a mental agreement. It is a daily practice. It shows up in your mornings. It shows up in your choices. It shows up in what you say yes to and what you say no to.
If God is truly first, there will be evidence. There will be time carved out for prayer, for His Word, and for worship. Not leftovers. Not what is remaining after everything else has eaten up your day. The first fruits of your time.
Your Treasure Follows Your Heart
Jesus said something in Matthew 6:21 that still pierces me today:
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
How you handle your money reveals so much about your heart. When we give to God first, before bills, before wants, before anything else, we are making a declaration. We are saying that we trust Him more than we trust our bank accounts. We are acknowledging that everything we have came from Him anyway.
Malachi 3:10 puts it boldly:
"Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it."
God invites us to test Him. That is how confident He is in His faithfulness. When you put Him first in your finances, you position yourself for supernatural provision.
Lessons to Carry With You
Let me leave you with some truths to hold onto as you walk this journey of putting God first.
One: Putting God first is a daily decision, not a one-time event. You will have to choose Him again tomorrow. And the day after. And every single day for the rest of your life. It is a lifestyle, not a moment.
Two: When God is first, everything else finds its proper place. Your relationships become healthier. Your work gains meaning. Your peace deepens. Order comes to chaos when the King takes His rightful seat.
Three: You cannot serve two masters. Jesus said this plainly in Matthew 6:24. Either God is Lord of all, or He is not Lord at all. There is no middle ground.
Four: Seasons will test your priorities. Busy seasons, difficult seasons, successful seasons. Each one will tempt you to shift God from the center. Stay alert. Stay intentional.
Five: Grace covers your failures. You will stumble. There will be days when you get it wrong. But God is patient. He welcomes you back every time. First John 1:9 promises that when we confess, He is faithful to forgive.
A Final Word From My Heart to Yours,
Friend, I am still on this journey with you. I have not arrived. There are still days when my priorities get tangled and God gets pushed aside by the noise of life. But I keep coming back to the altar. I keep laying everything down. I keep saying, "Lord, You are first. Above my dreams. Above my fears. Above my plans. You are first."
And every time I do, He meets me there. He steadies me. He fills me. He reminds me that nothing in this world can satisfy like He can.
So today, I am not asking you to be perfect. I am asking you to be honest. Look at your life. Look at where God sits. And if He is not on the throne, invite Him there.
He has been waiting.
Colossians 1:18 says:
"And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence."
In all things, let Him have first place.
